The Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) is going to expand as well as upgrade Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA).HSIA is the gateway to Bangladesh by air. It will be a totally new airport for Bangladesh. This airport will help to meet the growing needs of the country as well as elevate the existing ones international standard.
Recently Air Vice Marshal M Sanaul Huq, the new Chairman of CAAB informally said to journalists that steps have been taken to build second runway and third terminal building to cope with increasing traffic. They will also help to less the pressure of present single runway and double the capacity of the airport.
He also informed that reputed international consultant has appointed to study feasibility of a brand new airport for Dhaka.
In Bangladesh both cargo and passenger have a healthy growth. In 2010, the number of passenger traffic was 4,718,000. The number increased to 5,100,000 in 2011; 5,574,000 in 2012; 5,880,443 in 2013 and 6,084,215 in 2014
So it is seen that in last five years Bangladesh has a significant air traffic growth.
A consortium consists of three countries of Bangladesh, South Korea and Singapore has already appointed to get engineering consultancy services.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism has endorsed the project. It is expected to complete the project with in June the year. And the project is expected to start around 2019 and complete by 2017.
